The many who are still doubting the ‘Change’ era and President Mohammadu Buhari's competence must have a rethink as he has embarked on empowering the unemployed.
The project is not only aimed at the unemployed but the less-privileged also. The office of the wife of the Vice-President, Mrs Osinbajo, has kicked off a vocational training programme tagged "Step Up", to train the poor, particularly the unemployed, in the country. The programme started penultimate week in five local government areas in Abuja and Lagos. The curriculum of the vocational skill training, which includes how to make soap (bar and liquid ) and is currently going on in some local government areas in Lagos, is aimed at empowering Nigerians and give an impression that they can be self-employed without relying on white-collar jobs, and also contribute to the country’s economic growth.
Islanders Int'l Magazine visited one of the centres, located on Savage Street, Lagos Island, where people were trained to acquire vocational skills. Apart from being taught how to produce liquid and bar soap (bathing and washing), they were also taught how to make disinfectants, and air fragrance. At the end of the programme/training, the Special Adviser to the wife of the Vice-President, Mrs. Fakorede, who represented Mrs. Osinbajo, advised the participants not to allow the knowledge acquired to end with the programme because the aim of the training was to empower them to start their own businesses without being dependent.
