Traders, danfo drivers defaced Lagos- Youth laments
In its bid to work together with the Lagos state government in achieving a better Lagos, The Concerned Youth of Lagos has expressed their dismay on the new face the Lagos Carter Bridge wears as traders and motorists take possession of the whole bridge and streets of Lagos for trading.
In a statement signed by its leader, Hon. Kehinde Aderoju; he said traders and motorist have converted roads to shop and parks on Lagos Island. “It is a herculean task driving from Oyingbo right into Idumota to access Balogun market. Danfo drivers have taken over the bridge. The lane that’s supposed to take three vehicles has been converted to a single lane causing a high gridlock.
“Meanwhile, traders are not left out in this menace. Few months ago when we noticed the gridlock on the following roads on Lagos Island, roads such as; Martins, Balogun, Ita Akanni, Nnamdi Azikwe and Idumgbo Avenue, even the Cater Bridge we thought their excesses was allowed because of the incoming election.
“Now election is gone, we need sanity back in Lagos. His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode should come to our rescue and bring back the accessible Lagos road we enjoyed during the reign of his predecessor. What we crave for is a better Lagos, a mega city that will be home for all and a society that will match other mega city in the world.”
He added that, “Our group could state here categorically that most of these people that trade on the bridge on the street of Lagos aren’t Lagosian either by birth or resident. They come in on Monday, stay in a make-shift at Pelewura where they pay N50 per day and leave for their home (Other state) on weekends.
“If government is really interested in making Lagos a Mega City as claimed things must be done rightly. Osodi has gone back to what it used to be, likewise Okada riders are now seen on high ways. Official of CBD (Central Business District) should also wake up to their responsibility and do away with traders that have taken over the Carter Bridge and other roads.” He said.
