A few hours ago, Theater Arts And Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), under the leadership of Otunba Bolaji Amusan aka Mr Latin held its National Delegate Conference, which had in attendance all the National Executive Council(NEC), Governors and their Executives, 3 members from each State including all the Local Government Chairmen and Secretaries at the association’s National Secretariat, Old Bodija Estate, Bodija Ibadan, Oyo State.
The conference was to determine the prospect of the great Association for the betterment and benefits of its members.
While addressing the participants, president Bolaji Amusan implored all Filmmakers in the Yoruba Movie genre of Nollywood, who are yet to join TAMPAN to do the needful in other to enjoy the full support of the association when the need arises.
According to him, “In the midst of confusion, we need a direction. On this note, I welcome you all to this important confab, the conference of our delegates to deliberate upon and pass into law the amendments to our existing constitution. Today, we are taking historic and concrete steps that will further strengthen our understanding, expand the frontiers of our inclusiveness and deepen our bond as one people under TAMPAN. The present day TAMPAN is a composition of experts from different field in filmmaking/Stage craft and business. In our admirable association, we have the Actors, Directors, artistic Directors, Playwright, Screenplay writers, Dramatists/Dramaturge, Assistant Directors, Producers, Line Producers, Cinematographers, Continuity Managers, Production Managers, Scenic Designers, Art Designers, Make-Up Artistes, Costumier, Gaffers, Sparks and so on and so forth. Since TAMPAN has an eclectic composition, our constitution must cover the multidisciplinary nature of the association so that our union can be fair to all with deliverables that will be beneficial to us as specialist. Therefore, our coming together today is to look at the great work our constitutional amendment committee has done, if they are good and representational enough, then we pass it into law.
However, let me reiterate here that TAMPAN is an institution that is greater than you and me. Some people can see themselves as the salt of the earth considering their stardom, but they should remember that salt can only be useful when in association but useless in when in isolation. The idea of our founders and pioneers is to have an association for all regardless of your background and belief. For that reason, we choose to encourage all artistes from every area of specialization in the craft of filmmaking and theatre practice that are outside the fold of TAMPAN to please come into the fold. Let us bond together in progress. We will be there for you when it matters. Despite that, in my course of the leadership of this our noble association, I have come to realize that a good communication is the best medicine for healthy association. Communication sometimes is not what you first hear; therefore listen not just to the words, but listen for the reason of the words. We will continue to be in the news with our programs because of two reasons;
1. The programs are progressives and 2. TAMPAN is not a secret society. We need to be heard by the public we serve because we are of them and for them. I can assure whoever that is afraid of our strong presence in the media that they need not be scared because this is not an attempt to undermine them but to repair our damaged image by some unscrupulous individuals and reposition our association for better tomorrow.
Furthermore, there are four standard types of theatre management namely; authoritarian, benevolent, consultative and participative. Authoritarian was the style in use during our Alarinjo (Traveling Theatre) era. By my understanding of authoritarian, it means autocratic, dictatorial, despotic and tyranny. This regime believes so much in collaboration, which explains why we consult a lot and allow for participation of everybody that can genuinely help our aspirations to take TAMPAN beyond the regional level and to the mainstream of filmmaking and theatre practice. And on that premise, I really appreciate our trustees. They keep playing the matured roles expected of leaders who truly want advancement for TAMPAN. Their contributions are utility to our course and we will not disappoint you. Alhaji Adebayo Salami, Prince Babajide Kosoko, Iya Awero, I want you to know that today you are serving as our leverage; we will tomorrow be your levitation.
Finally my dear colleagues, permit me to very quickly review the foundational principles that drive this our action, as I have addressed a few matters arising. I need to emphasize that this is a TAMPAN Project, a sincere and fundamental undertaking, aimed at realistically examining and genuinely resolving, longstanding impediments to our cohesion and harmonious development as a truly professional body. Please do this without sentiments or emotions. Take note that MOPICON is coming fast and we need to prepare for any unexpected challenges that may come with it. Ladies and gentlemen, gatherings such as this provide a valuable medium for the executives, industry specialists and decision makers to share ideas that will help our course. Thank you all for coming as I can only hope for a better TAMPAN.
