Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has unveiled the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun and warned its officials against harassment and extortion.
Makinde who gave the warning during the passing out parade of the pioneer members of Amotekun Corps in the State on Wednesday at the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education in Oyo, urged members of the public to cooperate with the Corps.
Present at the event were Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun; Chief of Staff, Chief Bisi Ilaka; former Oyo Central District Senator, Mrs. Monsurat Sunmonu and Deputy Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Abiodun Fadeyi.
It was gathered that no fewer than one thousand five hundred Corps members passed out after the 18-day orientation.
Makinde, while speaking, said that the 1,500 Amotekun Corps personnel would be posted to all the 351 electoral wards in the state and urged the security personnel to exhibit a high level of professionalism while discharging their duties.
The governor said, “You are not to harass anybody. You are to exhibit a high level of professionalism. Our regional integration in the South West with Amotekun will come to limelight.
“Anyone who is not authorized to walk in the night should not walk in the night. Don’t let Amotekun beat you with Koboko”, the governor said.
Makinde maintained that the Amotekun Corps would work with other security agencies in the state.
This afternoon, we held the passing-out ceremony of the Àmòtékún Corps in Oyo Town. It’s been a long journey to get to this point from July 2019, when the first meeting was held by all six south west governors to set up a regional security outfit.
The Àmòtékún Corps will collaborate with federal security agencies to secure our state. Members of the corps will be drafted to all the 351 wards in Oyo State. As I have stated before, they will be answerable to me and so, I will be responsible for their actions.
